Plastic Chips

About Plastic Chips:
You asked an we listened!!  By demand, here is the new Plastic Chip section of PokerChipReviews.com. I finally received a good amount of nice, well made plastic chips that I felt deserved to be mentioned.  All of these chips are 100% plastic with or without a metal insert.  There is no 'composite' or 'clay' or any other fancy-ish material in these.  For many of these chips, reviewing their 'feel' and 'handling' gets pretty redundant, because in those areas, they are identical.

One thing that is very important to consider when looking at plastic chips is the widely varying quality between manufacturers and vendors.  What may appear to be two identical chips in pictures, may turn out to be vastly different once you end up with them in your hands.  The chips on this page, from these specific vendors, are good to very good in quality in their manufacturing process.

Rating System:
Everything is a 1 to 10, with 10 being the best.  FEEL is the overall feel of the chip when you handle it, shuffle it, splash it, etc etc.....  QUALITY is how well the chip has been manufactured as well as my guess on how well it will hold up in the long run. Off center graphics and bleeding colors take points away from QUALITY. Finally, LOOKS is how attractive the chip design itself is to my own eyes.  This one is the most subjective.  Here is where the pictures help you make your own decision.

11.5 Gram Aces: The 11.5 gram Aces have a silk-screened graphic, not sticker, on them.  The edge spots are good, but there is some minor molding issues on them.  There's a slight ring on the graphic on all the chips where the center drops just a touch down and the silk-screening process can't hit the chip surface.  It is noticeable and does take away from the chip's appearance a bit.  These chips do have a metal insert.

11.5 Gram Dice: The name "11.5 Gram Dice" in the home chip world is not the best association for those who know a little about poker chips.  The vast majority chips that go by this name are absolute crap. I know of at least 6 different versions of chips that are called "11.5 Gram Dice".  Of those six, I think these are easily the best true plastic version. Like all of AceHigh's plastic chips, mold and color quality are excellent, with no bleeding or translucent plastic. These chips are probable the most interesting looking of the 11.5 gram chips due to their colorful spots. These chips have a metal insert.

11.5 Gram Tri-Colored: The triple colored chips are some of my favorite looking designs in both the plastic and composite arenas.  These chips come in very good.  Molding is good....not perfect...but really good.  Design is straight forward and the color combos, to my eye, are also very good. They do have a metal insert.

Custom Plastic Chips: These are some of the first plastic chips I've seen with real nice looking custom artwork.  The images are crisp, clear and even colorfull on some.  They colored images can be damaged with your fingernail if you work at it, but for general use, they should hold up very well.  The hot-stamping is a bit more sturdy. The chips in my sample all had metal inserts and created the metalic ringing sound when handled.

European Style: So you bought the recently released Casino Royale chips but are missing out on those cool high-denom plaques you saw in the movie???  Well....have I got a scratch for that itch.  From a new vendor on the site, these chips come from a supplier in Europe.  These chips are european style, which is very different from what we are used to on this side of the pond.  They are not exactly the greatest to stack, feel pretty plasticy, fairly light weight...but still manage to pull of a pretty good win on the 'cool' side.  One final thing to add....check it out....no currency for the denoms.  Smart.  Very different and very suave for your next black-tie poker party.  What was that?  I said shaken...not stirred.....

Fan of Cards: Two styles of Fan Of Cards chips arrived last week.  Both have an extremely similar design, but one significant difference.  One set's center graphics have a matt, very slightly textured surface, and the other's have a very high-gloss and very slick graphic.  While I'm not normally a big fan of anything glossy on a poker chip, these actually pull it off pretty well.  Mold work on the chips is good, but not great.  There are some slight signs of bleeding and general mold weirdness that is so common on most plastic chips.  That said...I've certainly seen a LOT worse.  Both chips are pretty slick to stack and both have a metal insert.

Flame Chips: The Flame chips have a very good looking graphics.  There was absolutely no bleeding or molding problems with any of these chips.  Very interesting design and great manufacturing quality.  These chips have a metal insert.

Holdem Saloon:  Another custom chip set based on the Texas Holdem plastic chip.  These are exclusive through this particular vendor.  Inserts have a good design, and the Texas Holdem chips are some of the better plastic chips out there.  Unfortunately with my samples, many of the chips were 'spinners'....where the insert was just slightly raised in the center of the chip.  Not good for stacking, needless to say.  I haven't had this problem with other custom Texas Holdem chips...so not to sure what happened here.  It's a bad mark on an otherwise well designed chip.  These chips have a metal insert.

Jackpot Casino Plastics: The Jackpot Casinos hit you with a nice graphic 'sticker' insert.  The sticker is very sturdy and won't be going anywhere unless your poker buddy has a sharp object in his/her hand.  Outside of that, the chip itself is OK...but nothing over-the-top in originality or quality.  Probably the worst of it is the very irregular quality of the edge spots, which can be seen in the photos.  Also, the chip is very slick...so keep this one off of your stacking contest list.  In the end, an OK chip with a good-looking insert.

Military Commemorative: Another custom chip based on the Texas Holdem plastic chip, these guys pay homage to our four military branches.  Available exclusively through this particular vendor, these chips have a nice, quality, insert that shows the various military coats of arms and has a matt finish.  The inserts are good stuff and should easily handle normal poker chip use.  If you have anyone at your game annoying enough to mess with these chips with a knife or other handily available prying instrument, they deserve an extra smack up side the head for screwing with these honorable chips.  Well done and good looking.  These chips have a metal insert.

Radiant: The color combos here are the most interesting.  I'm not a huge fan myself of the chip design, but it certainly gains some attention.  Once again, great molds from AceHighSupply with no bleeding issues at all.  High quality plastic chips.  These chips have a metal insert.

Royal Suits: Royal Suits offer a brown chip, which is sort of interesting.  As with the other AceHighCupply products, these chips have perfect mold work with no bleeding or coloring issues.  Not quite as visually striking as the Flame chips, none the less still good looking. These chips have a metal insert.

Unicorn: I get an email about these about once a month.  From ChipCo, these are are lighter weight, less expensive chip than their Ceramics.  Their sound is so/so, even though they do NOT have a metal insert. Probably the best part about the chips is their great texture and good looking mold design.  As you can see in the picture, these chips can be hot-stamped.

Addition - 5/10/05: Lot's of new photos!!!!

Texas Holdem': These are actually a variety of customized chips based on the popular Texas Holdem chip.  The Texas Holdems offer a good quality chip with a nice mold at a cost that's not going to cause a divorce.  These customized chips come from UltimatePokerSupplies.com and have a high-quality sticker insert.  The sticker is VERY hard to remove unless some kind of sharp instrument is involved.  In normal poker use, these should be considered permanent.  A nice touch as well is the matt finish of the sticker, with blends well with the finish of the chip itself.  Sound is above average for a plastic chip due to the sticker helping to deaden the 'metallic' sound. Good looking chips at a reasonable cost is right up pokerCHIPreviews' alley.  These chips have a metal insert.

Winning Hand: Straightforward 'deck of cards' chip with AceHigh's great mold work. These chips have a decal in the center w/ a slightly rough texture.  The decal also helps *slightly* muffle the 'ring' caused by having a metal insert.  Not a bad thing.  I'm not so sure about the black denoms on the dark background, but aside from that, this is definitely one of the better plastic chips out there.
